Do you love reading? Do you find satisfaction in catching typos and other written errors? Do you want to make a living doing something you love? Do you dream of working from the comfort of your own home and setting your own schedule?
If so, a proofreading career might be right for you!
But how should you begin? I’m often asked this question, so here’s my answer:
Studying proofreading books is a wonderful way to start. So is testing your abilities with proofreading exercises. This will also help you decide whether you truly want to pursue proofreading as a career.
But please realize that proofreading involves so much more than simply catching errant typos and playing around with punctuation. You’ll need to have a deep understanding of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and more.
If you’re serious about proofreading, I highly recommend professional training. Many people want to be proofreaders, but not all are serious enough to train for the profession. Don’t make that mistake. Set yourself up for success by training—just as you would for any other career. Through study and practice, you’ll gain the skills necessary to take on proofreading jobs with confidence.
Don’t worry; the education may be work, but if proofreading is the right line of work for you, you’ll probably enjoy it. I know I did!
One course I recommend is through the highly rated Proofreading Academy.
Their Becoming A Proofreader course is both affordable and thorough. Check out the syllabus and details here to see if it’s right for you and your career. You can even sample the material by signing up for a free trial.
In addition to the quality course content, Proofreading Academy’s work guarantee (for students who pass with an 80% or higher grade) also makes their course extremely attractive.
I hope you find this information helpful, and I wish you the best in jumpstarting a successful proofreading career!
